What is Nvu?
Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a "new view") is a
complete Web Authoring System that combines web file management and
easy-to-use WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web page
editing. Nvu is designed to be extremely easy to use, making
it ideal for non-technical computer users who want to create an
attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML
or web coding. Top
How do I
build a web site using Nvu?
Please see the tutorial: Learn How To Build
Your Web Site Using Nvu
Is Nvu a clone
of Microsoft's FrontPage and/or Macromedia's Dreamweaver?
FrontPage and Dreamweaver are popular HTML
editors for MS Windows. These programs have become popular
because they make web design extremely easy, even for non-technical
people. Nvu is not an exact clone of either of these
products, but it does contain many of the same easy-to-use features
which makes these programs so popular.Users familiar with
either of these two products will feel right at home using
Nvu.
Who is Nvu
best suited for?
Nvu is designed to be extremely easy to
use. This makes it ideal for non-technical computer users who
want to create an attractive, professional-looking web site without
needing to know HTML or web coding. Nvu allows you to create
web pages as easily as you would type a word processing document, and
then publish them to your web site just by saving the
document. This makes it ideal for home use, students,
marketing professionals, general business use, and so on.
Even though it's designed for the novice web designer, Nvu is also
ideal for experienced web programmers who want to save time in creating
content or web design. Because you can quickly toggle between
the WYSIWYG editing mode and the HTML code mode, just by changing tabs,
Nvu is also ideal for those wishing to learn HTML programming, as they
can easily observe the interaction between the HTML code and what a
user will see in their web browser. The bottom line is that
Nvu is ideal for anyone who wants to quickly create web
pages.
How is Nvu
different from other HTML editors available for Linux?
There are five main differences: 1)
Emphasis on ease-of-use for the non-technical user, 2) Robust WYSIWYG
editing, 3) Integrated web file management, 4) Enhanced handling of
forms, templates, etc., and 5) Extensibility which allows advanced
users to build their own extensions to Nvu with a just a dash of
JavaScript. For instance, it will be very easy to create new "smart
widgets" (i.e. a calendar, a date/time widget, a mail widget, etc.) and
integrate them with one click into Nvu.
Is Nvu Open
Source?
Yes. Nvu is open source and covered
under the MPL/LGPL/GPL tri-license. Please see the Nvu licensing page: nvudev.com/licensing.php for more info. This means you can
download, edit and redistribute the code. The Nvu code will
also be merged back into the main Mozilla CVS tree.
Who is behind
the Nvu project?
Nvu was started by Linspire,
Inc. Linspire is committed exclusively to bringing
Desktop Linux to the masses, and realized that an easy-to-use web
authoring system was needed for Linux to continue its expansion to the
Desktop. Linspire contributes significant capital, expertise,
servers, bandwidth, marketing, and other resources to guarantee the
continuation and success of the Nvu project. Linspire is
pleased to have been able to contract with Daniel Glazman from
Disruptive
Innovations to be the lead developer and maintainer for the
Nvu project. Daniel has been the chief architect for Mozilla
Composer and brings a tremendous amount of experience and expertise to
the Nvu project.
Is Nvu
starting from scratch or from existing code?
Nvu was started from the Mozilla
Composer code base. As you may have heard, the
Mozilla Internet suite is in the process of being broken up into
individual pieces (browser, email, etc.). Nvu will pick up
where Composer left off, adding additional features, functionality and
ease of use.
How is
Nvu different from Mozilla Composer?
Mozilla Composer was created to bring HTML
editing capabilities to the Mozilla Internet Suite. Nvu takes
that basic functionality to a new level by adding integrated web site
management, better form and table support, better browser
compatibility, etc.
Will Mozilla
still keep the Composer product?
Mozilla will always need a good HTML editor for
their email project. To what extent they continue with the
Composer project as a stand-alone product will be determined by
them. We're hopeful many of those who were involved with
Composer will get involved with the Nvu project.
How do I
install Nvu?
Once available, go to the Download Page
for details on installing Nvu to your computer system.
What operating
systems will Nvu be available for?
Because Nvu is open source and anyone can
contribute code, in time, it could be available for a number of
operating systems, but the focus of the project is really to bring an
easy-to-use, quality web authoring system to Desktop Linux.
How do developers
get involved in the Nvu project?
The best way that you can get involved in the project is to join the Nvu Forums and check out the Nvu Wiki.
Can I support Nvu with donations?
Many
people have asked how they can help support the Nvu project with cash
donations. Currently Linspire, Inc. is
the chief financial sponsor for Nvu. Linspire believes
strongly in open source software and has committed to continue its
financial support to the Nvu project. To see other projects
that Linspire has contributed to visit www.linspire.com/opensource.
The best way to support Nvu is by supporting Linspire through the
purchase of their products and services at www.linspire.com/buy.
